ESRB: Mature
Plot
The game is set in a fictional future, over a three day period in the year 2048. In this future, no UN or NATO forces exist as they were superseded by a private military company named Mantel Global Industries. The player will assume the mantle of Sergeant Shane Carpenter; a new recruit in the Mantel Global Industries army. Carpenter fights rebels in South America in the war between the rebels and the Mantel Global Industries army, which began in the year 2032.
Mantel Global Industries (not to be confused with the similar MenTel Corporation from Fortress) was founded by David Bloomfield, who also appears as a recruiter in the trailer[2]
Mantel Global Industries is also a multinational corporation with bio-medical expertise. This has led to the development of Nova-Keto-Thyrazine - also called NECTAR[2]. A nutritional supplement that enables soldiers to fight harder and smarter. This is shown to us through the second trailer when Shane says that "NECTAR made him one of the world's most elite soldiers". Although as you progress through the game, you find out that there is more to Mantel and the "nectar" than meets the eye. In one trailer the body of a dead civilian disappears as the Nectar is administered. This could be a mind bending effect of Nectar but it could also be the way the game unclutters the environment. However, in a developer interview, there is a sequence in which the character's suit apparently malfunctions and causes the helmet to open up, revealing a bleak black and white landscape punctuated with horrifying cries of pain. Once again, the player comes across a corpse on the ground which disappears as soon as the helmet closes and the suit's firmware resets, also causing the world to become colorful again.
The game takes place over three days that will "change Shane forever." Mantel battles a guerrilla group known as The Promise Hand lead by a dictator called Gabriel "Skin coat" Merino; a brutal man who wears the flayed skins of his POW camp inmates.
Characters
Shane Carpenter Apparently born in the year 2023, Carpenter is 25 by the events in the game and is the character that the player assumes the role of. In the , that there was a 90% chance that Shane would not live past 20, in the year 2043, this puts Shane's age in the game that we play at 25 years old (roughly). The second trailer then tells us that Shane did survive past the age of 20 because "Mantel set him free". Shane's mother was killed at The World Games, this world games is known by the people in HAZE as <>, when Shane is 9 years old (this information is shown in the second Haze trailer).
Nectar Powers
A player in Nectar mode demonstrates enhanced sight
Nectar gives the user better speed, accuracy and strength; the ability to see enemies through cover by highlighting them and a hazard warning sense (for example, thrown grenades will have a rippling effect surrounding them enabling the user to avoid them). However, when used in excess, Nectar has devastating effects: the user will become visually incapable of distinguishing friend from foe and will fire at everyone in sight (in the player's case, pointing the gun at any friendly or enemy unit will cause it to fire automatically). This can happen to your teammates as well, leaving the player to choose whether they should be killed to minimize damage or hide and hope the effects wear off. Enemies can even try to induce Nectar overdosing in your squad, either by the use of "Nectar Grenades" or by shooting your squad's Nectar administrators located below the back of their necks which cause their air-tight masks to
